Mixed end to April opening

by Brian Turner

Worldwide financial markets ended the week with less than uniform results.

The London financial markets ended the week on the upswing Friday, starting the second quarter on a hopeful note.

Among the reasons for this are several takeover attempts and the fact that 24 percent of reporting companies had higher than average earnings and another 71 percent met their predicted earnings in the most recent reports.

Meanwhile, the New York markets ended the week and began the second quarter on a losing note after a more optimistic start to the week.

Among the reasons given for the decline were uncertainties over oil prices, lower than expected job creation outside the farm sector, and new concerns over inflation.

In Japan, the Nikkei and Topix indices were both up on the strength of rising prices for crude oil and despite the unexpected drop in an important quarterly survey of business confidence.
