Napster UK pushes market presence

Oil price rise impacts markets

Napster’s UK division has made a deal with Channel 4 to produce a series of short music programs that will also be available to Napster’s online subscribers.

This departure from Napster’s online music download service, which will feature popular artists such as Garbage, has been called by the company’s vice-president as their “next logical step” into entertainment distribution.

This may be the beginning of what the company’s chairman announced in January as a move into video and movie subscription services, as well as into the video-game market. The program with the Scottish band Garbage will be the first in a series of 11 programs.

Napster has gone in the direction of monthly subscriptions for music downloads in opposition to Apple’s iTunes, which charges its customers a per song fee; the two are currently competing to become the preferred way for music fans to download their favorite songs.
