PSP strong sales debut in US

Sony claims that over 500,000 of their new PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game consoles were purchased in the first two days of their availability in North America.

About half of retailers had less than 3 units left in stock after the first week, though some analysts question whether this lives up to expectations that Sony had set itself.

The game console was launched March 24 with Sony claiming $150 million in sales the first week.

This was said to be quite a success, as the launch did not come during the traditional holiday season and in view of the fact that many retailers were closed for the Easter holiday.

Sony has focused its marketing efforts for this new product on the U.S. and has delayed its European launch by several months.

It was first launched in Japan, where it has sold over one million units. Besides games, the PSP also has the capability to play films and music as well as shows recorded on Tivo recorders.

It also allows for instant messaging but does not feature an internet browser.
