The private medical insurer, PruHealth, is to embark on a joint venture supermarket giant Sainsbury’s in a move that could see PruHealth PMI customers rewarded for buying fresh fruit and vegetables at Sainsbury’s.

Both individual and corporate policyholders of PruHealth will earn PruHealth Vitality Points when they purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at Sainsbury’s. For each £2 spent on a weekly fruit and vegetable shop, 1 PruHealth Vitality point will be earned which will then be accumulated during the year and offset against your premiums the following year, assuming no claims have been made.

Individual policyholders will be capped at 10 points per week and the maximum number of points an individual policyholder can accumulate during the year is 520. Family policyholders are restricted to 20 points per week per family policy. A family can accumulate a maximum of 1040 points during any one year.

To take advantage of these benefits, PruHealth customers will have to give them their Nectar card number. All members over 18 on a policy can register a Nectar card and the total spend each week will be used to calculate the points earned by the policy.

A spokesperson for PruHealth said they are pleased to form a partnership with Sainsbury’s. This is the first time in the UK that a health insurer has provided a retail benefit on everyday grocery shopping. The partnership shows that both companies are committed to improving health in the UK.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson highlighted that they are always seeking opportunities to encourage customers to lead healthier lifestyles. By eating healthily, insurance premiums could potentially be reduced.
