Ensure your children are properly insured at school
by Kay Murchie
The new school year has well and truly started but is your child properly insured if they lose valuable equipment or suffer a sports injury?
According to insurer, esure, the contents of an average school bag is worth approximately £265 with some children carrying around £1,000 if you take into consideration mobile phones, consoles or iPods.
Three in five secondary school students take a mobile phone and nearly 20% have a handheld console so these items should be covered. Esure recommend checking your existing home contents insurance – mobile phones, consoles and iPods should all be covered. Furthermore, if your child plays a musical instrument or participates in sports, extra cover may be required.
If your child is learning to play a musical instrument, the school may lend one but if you are buying a brand new one, the costs can be as follows - violins £75, clarinets £300 and electric guitars £150.
It is recommended that you ask your home insurer to cover these items under the personal possessions section. For example, insurer Direct Line states that musical instruments and sports equipment would be covered under its personal possession cover, however, racquets and bats are not covered if damaged whilst in play.
Some insurance companies offer specialist musical instrument cover. For example, Orchestralguard 4 Schools from Pavilion starts at £30 a year for any orchestral instrument to the value of £1,000 and covers accidental damage and theft (including in car theft) for children aged 8-18.
Around 180,000 children aged 5-14 years old suffer an injury while playing sports. Many local authorities offer cheap insurance for sports injuries but if not, look into the options of personal accident policy.
Insurance broker B Portwood & Co covers children’s personal injury, paying out up to £100,000 for permanent disability. Premiums start from £42.50 for one child.
