Barclaycard, the global credit card provider, has announced plans to close its card production and statement mailing operation in Northampton. At least 160 jobs are affected.

The work is to be transferred to other companies in Milton Keynes, Gloucestershire, and Leicester. Print production will be outsourced to RR Donnelley in Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire.

Card operations will move to Gemalto in Fareham, Hampshire.

The 160 workers affected have informed of the company’s plans, and will continue to work at the operation in Northampton until operations cease at the end of the year. They will then be given a further 3 months on full pay to find alternative employment.

Paul Fabara, Barclaycard’s global chief operating officer, said decisions like these are never easy and we will do everything we can to support our colleagues affected by this change.

Barclaycard operates in an extremely competitive industry and we are looking to build a global credit card business, concluded Mr Fabara.
