London equities see declines

London equities see declines

London’s equities markets were lower on Friday, with the FTSE 100 down 0.24 percent to 6.053.5 and the FTSE 250 suffering a decline of 0.48 percent to 10,049.3 after a business-only airline folded operations and the real estate sector saw losses.

In continental Europe, on the other hand, the airlines and technology sectors sent equities higher.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was up 0.31 percent to 1,334.39 while the IBEX was 0.45 percent higher to 13,600.9, the Dax added 0.59 percent to 7,096.79 and the CAC-40 gained 0.77 percent to 5,014.28.

Most Asia-Pacific region markets saw gains, but in Australia the Sydney Ordinaries fell 0.74 percent to 5,773.9 and the S&P/ASX200 was down 0.96 percent to 5,654.7 while in Taiwan the Taiex dropped 0.76 percent to 8,619.08.

Gainers in the region included South Korea’s Kospi index, which was 0.59 percent higher to 1,852.02 while the Sensex and Hang Seng each added 0.61 percent, to 16,415.57 and 24,533.12, the Shanghai Composite was up 0.94 percent to 3,433.35 and the Straits Timex Index gained 1.01 percent to 3,192.62.

Tokyo’s markets also saw advances.

The Nikkei 225 was up 1.52 percent to 14,338.54 while the Topix index added 1.99 percent to 1,408.14 and the Mothers market gained 0.47 percent to 652.35.

In late afternoon trade in New York the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.01 percent to 12,647.77 while the Nasdaq Composite was 0.51 percent higher to 2,521.17 and the S&P 500 gained 0.21 percent to 1,401.23 as the technology and energy sectors saw gains.

Crude oil, metals and grains prices all saw gains on the day.

The US dollar was weaker versus the euro and the yen but made gains on the Canadian dollar and on the pound.
