BP, Royal Dutch Shell see declines
Most European equities markets saw declines Wednesday on declining oil and metals prices and on earnings reports that disappointed.
In London the FTSE 100 was down 2.34 percent to 4,530.73 and the FTSE 250 dropped 0.31 percent to 6,757.46.
BP (LSE: BP; NYSE: BP; TYO: 5051) was down 1.92 percent while Royal Dutch Shell‘s (LSE: RDS A, RDS B; NYSE: RDS.A, RDS.B) A shares were down 4.83 percent and its B shares fell 4.22 percent.
The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was down 2.15 percent to 953.24 as the CAC-40 fell 1.98 percent to 3,618.11 and the Dax dropped 2.11 percent to 5,166.87 but Spain’s IBEX added 0.18 percent to 9,744.7.
On the other hand, most equities markets in the Asia-Pacific region were up Wednesday on positive reaction to the election of Barack Obama is the next US President, which raised hopes that the economy could finally begin to recover.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 4.46 percent to 9,521.24 while the Topix index added 6.17 percent to 966.91 and the Mothers market of small and mid-caps gained 5.52 percent to 335.49.
Other markets seeing gains in the region included the Straits Times Index with a gain of 2.14 percent and the Kospi, which added 2.44 percent, while in Australia the Sydney Ordinaries gained 2.82 percent to 4,287.3 and the S&P/ASX200 was 2.88 percent higher to 4,336.6.
The Shanghai Composite added 3.16 percent to 1,760.61 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 3.17 percent to 14,840.16.
Not all markets in the region were higher as the Taiex fell 0.29 percent to 4,978.26 in Taiwan and India’s Sensex fell 4.81 percent to 10,120.01.
Wall Street was lower at just past 2:30 p.m. in New York, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 3.04 percent to 9,332.65 while the Nasdaq Composite had fallen 3.27 percent to 1,721.95 and the S&P 500 had dropped 2.99 percent to 975.68.
Crude oil prices and most metals prices were lower on the session, while grains prices saw substantial declines on the Chicago Board of Trade.
The US dollar weakened on disappointing data while the pound was stronger on the session.
