TUC urges Government to tackle unemployment issue
Brendan Barber, the head of the TUC, has warned that 2009 will be a ‘grim year’ due to ‘mass unemployment’ and is urging the Government to take immediate action.
Mr Barber said unemployment is set to increase every month next year and in a New Year message said that a top priority for the Government is to make the recession ‘as short and shallow as possible’.
Mr Barber believes that if bold action is taken, 2009 could be a decisive turning point.
His message comes just one day after the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) warned that the first quarter of 2008 could see nearly 300,000 people lose their jobs in Britain, making it the worst year for jobs since the early 1990s.
The CIPD is warning that unemployment is set to rise even more over the next 12 months, taking the total out of work to 3 million in 2010.
Job losses have been rife this week after a number of well-known retailers have been placed into administration, with experts warning that a dozen more retailers could go bust in the New Year.
The head of the TUC also said the Government should be prepared to offer further financial assistance to struggling financial institutions, stating that more funds need to be pumped into the financial system to kick-start lending.
While Mr Barber said the Government would not be expected to come to the aid of every struggling company, he said short-term assistance is vital to Britain’s future.
