Got a business idea? Act now

Twenty nine is the best age for setting up a new business, a recent survey has revealed.

Abbey Business Banking asked owners of small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) what they consider the ideal age to go it alone.

Twenty nine was the average age given by respondents, although almost a quarter (24%) said 25 is the best age for starting a business.

Abbey also asked respondents what age they were when they started a business.

The average response was 35, suggesting that most business owners wish they had been brave enough to start younger.

Abbey Business Banking spokesperson Paula Ickinger said although 29 seems like a young age start a business, the advice from those running a business is clear: if you have an idea, act on it now.

Ickinger added that credit crunch induced fears of failing should be pushed aside.

A solid business plan is enough to take brave individuals far, she said.

For those with the courage to take the plunge, help could be at hand.

Yesterday, business secretary Peter Mandelson unveiled a £20 billion investment plan aimed at encouraging bank lending to UK-based SMEs.
