The rip-off of women-only car insurance
by David Masters
Specialist motor insurance for women and older drivers is often more expensive than traditional insurance, claims moneysupermarket.com.
Research by the price comparison site found that a 30-year-old woman driving a Ford Focus would pay an average of £622 with a women-only brand.
This is 60% higher than the average cover price of £388 from traditional providers.
Moneysupermarket.com’s director of insurance, Andy Leadbetter, said: “Specialist insurers such as Sheila’s Wheels and Diamond may appear to be a better value alternative for women - catering specifically for their motoring needs.
“Our research, however, shows it pays to scour the whole market for the best value policy to suit individual circumstances; paying almost £400 over the odds is an unnecessary expenditure.”
He added: “Specialist insurers do offer added benefits such as handbag cover, female-friendly garages, and a 24 hour roadside emergency help line, but I advise Brits to weigh up whether these additions are actually worth the extra money.”
Older drivers may also find themselves paying more than necessary by opting for a specialist insurer.
A 60-year old male driving a Ford Focus would pay an average of £431 with a specialist provider.
This is 80% higher than the average cover price of £234 with traditional brands.
Leadbetter said: “Older drivers must also be wary of paying more than necessary.
“I urge motorists to shop around, to find the best cover to suit their needs.”
