UBS reports annual loss, further job losses
Swiss banking giant, UBS, has reported a full-year loss of SwFr19.7 billion (£11.3 billion) following a turbulent year in the banking industry.
Furthermore, the bank, which is Switzerland’s largest, reported a fourth quarter loss of SwFr8.1 billion.
UBS said it plans to refocus on its domestic market after a turbulent year overseas and is to create two new business units – wealth management and Swiss bank and wealth management Americas.
The bank said it is cautious about the future and confirmed a further 2,000 jobs are to go at its investment arm.
UBS, which has a global workforce of 17,000, received SwFr6 billion from its Government last October. The bank is among one of the worst hit victims of the sub-prime mortgage crisis.
In November, it was announced that its chief executive, chairman and the executive board will not receive bonus payments for 2008.
Finally, the bank remains in the spotlight due to several investigations, one being a tax evasion probe in the US.
