CBI: UK retail sales in further decline

”CBI:

Figures from the CBI revealed a further decline in retail sales this month albeit the rate of the decline has slowed.

According to the CBI’s distributive trades survey, 27% of retailers reported that sales in the first half of the month were higher than a year ago.

This is compared with the 52% of retailers who reported that their sales were lower.

The DIY and durable household goods sectors suffered badly while footwear and leather stores are performing well said the CBI.

However, the CBI noted that while conditions were marginally better than January, sales are still expected to decline next month.

In the meantime, confidence in the retail sector is low with 26% expecting the business situation to deteriorate in the coming few months.

Furthermore, the CBI said its survey revealed that 49% of retailers said they had reduced their workforce – the largest since the quarterly survey commenced over 25 years ago.

Meanwhile, a record balance of 45% said they are planning to cut their workforce in March.
