City dwellers dream of countryside escape

More than on in three city dwellers are thinking about moving to the countryside because of the level of crime in their neighbourhood.

In a poll by Halifax Home Insurance, 37% of urbanites said criminal activity has prompted them to think about moving to a more rural location.

This is compared to just 8% of people living in villages who said they have thought about moving because of crime.

Despite city dwellers perceiving higher levels of crime, nearly half (47%) of those polled who live in inner cities believe that walking through the city streets at night is safer than walking down a deserted country lane.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: “The age-old dream of moving away from the big city to set up a peaceful life in the country is not unfamiliar to many urban dwellers, but it appears that young urbanites feel safer among the hustle and bustle of city streets than walking through a deserted country lane at night.”

He added that wherever people live, they “need to be aware of the steps they can take to protect themselves in and about their home.”
