applauds ‘cash for bangers’ scheme

” has welcomed Alistair Darling’s cash for scrapped cars scheme, announced in this week’s budget.

The price comparison site described the initiative - which pays motorists up to £2,000 for handing in their old car to update to a brand new model - as ‘fantastic’.

It is hoped that in addition to giving a boost to the struggling car industry, ‘cash for bangers’ will also reduce pollution by taking oil guzzling older cars off the road.

Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at, said: “The car scrappage scheme is a fantastic idea, which has worked brilliantly in other European countries.

“New car registrations fell by more than 30 per cent last month alone, so this incentive is a welcome move to kick-start the car market again.”

Under the scheme, cars and vans that are at least nine years old can be traded in for £2,000 towards a new car, or a vehicle that is less than one year old.
