Business survey finds Google world’s first $100bn brand

The BrandZ Top 100 survey, conducted by market research consultancy Millward Brown, has found Google to be the at the top spot of the Most Valuable Brands table.

Google, the search engine giant, has become the first $100bn name and 6 of the top 100 are UK brands with Vodafone in the top 10.

The recession has meant that more people are now turning to shopping at home online and, as a result brands, such as Amazon and eBay have experienced substantial growth. However, it has meant bad news for others as 15 names have fallen out of the BrandZ league table.

Not surprisingly, it is the car manufacturers and finance companies that have suffered the most with Chevrolet, Ford, Volkswagen Merrill Lynch, Wachovia and AIG all missing.

Google marketing manager, Lorraine Twohill, said that this is a sign that consumers trust the company and that is achieved by working in small teams.

Millward Brown chief executive, Joanna Seddon, said that the branding is even more important than ever in the current climate and that companies who continue to spend will benefit when the economy grows.

Ms Seddon was quick to point out that the recession does not harm individual brands as it does in the same way with faceless corporations.
