Average home needs £45,000 contents cover

Newlyweds should check their home contents insurance policy to make sure it covers the value of their wedding gifts, Direct Line said this week.

The average wedding gift is worth £79, meaning that a couple with just 50 wedding guests will need nearly £4,000 of extra cover on their home insurance.

A wedding ceremony with 150 guests, meanwhile, could result in £11,850 of presents.

In addition, newlyweds typically spend £4,000 on new items in preparation for their wedding.

“The value of home contents can quickly rise around the time of a wedding,” said Andrew Lowe, Direct Line’s head of home insurance.

“The costs of the wedding dress, flowers, jewellery and outfits for the wedding party can easily run to many thousands of pounds, so it will be a shrewd newlywed who checks their insurance policy to make sure that all of their purchases and gifts are protected in the event of loss, damage, or theft.”

Recent research by Sainsbury’s Home Insurance found that the average household’s contents are worth £45,000.
