Energy meter in every UK household

Today the government has announced a £9 billion scheme that will install a new smart energy meter in every UK home.

Both the Department for Energy & Climate Change and the energy companies believe that the measure will result in savings for consumers.

The meters are electronic and available for both gas and electricity and, as a result, send up-to-date accurate information and means that regular checks are not needed.

Furthermore it will aid households in monitoring their usage as there will be a monitor which will allow energy companies to communicate with their consumers and offer warning if there are unusual energy usage patterns.

Phil Bentley, the managing director of British Gas, said that it will be of huge benefit to consumers and with the end of estimated bills, it should be an end to complaints.

It has taken three years for the government to calculate the financing and logistics of the introduction, but now the scheme has been given the go-ahead, it has been received warmly by all parties.

The scheme will mean that each energy company is required to install their own meters, although these must be uniform so that consumers can still switch between providers.
