Further blow for Setanta as SPL terminates contract

It has emerged today that the Scottish Premier League (SPL) has pulled the plug on its live football deal with struggling Irish pay-TV sports broadcaster Setanta.

The news comes after the English Premier League terminated its 46-match deal last week after the company missed a payment of £10 million. Setanta therefore lost its rights to broadcast the 46 football matches next season.

However, in a further blow to Setanta, the SPL today followed its English counterpart in terminating its contract with the broadcaster.

Broadcasters have today been putting together bids for the 46 live games with BSkyB and US sports broadcaster ESPN the favourites to buy the rights to 23 games apiece.

Interested parties were given until this afternoon to place bids, however, it has been reported that the sums they have offered may fall short of the fee Setanta was paying.

Setanta’s board has met today to explore other ways of saving the company. The company’s founders, Leonard Ryan and Michael O’Rourke, have been striving to fight off administration by trying to secure finance to keep the firm up and running. The company employs 430 people, as well as 700 call centre workers.

Deloitte is on standby should the firm enter administration. However, should Setanta cease operation, it would lead to broadcasting rights for a number of other sporting events becoming available, which includes England games and FA Cup matches.

Setanta, which broadcasts football, cricket, golf and rugby union, has around 1.2 million subscribers. However, according to analysts, this is only about two-thirds of the number it needs and as a result the company is facing losses of up to £100 million a year.
