Check your bank balance via text message

Customers at Lloyds TSB are now able to request their bank account balance via text message.

The “Balance on Demand” service was launched today by the high street bank.

To check their bank balance, customers text BAL and the last four digits of their current account to a special short telephone number.

In reply, they receive a text that shows their current balance and their latest six transactions.

The service is included with packaged accounts, whilst standard customers are charged £2.50 per month for a “mobile banking pack” that includes the balance on demand service.

Customers who opt for the mobile banking pack can also use the service to transfer money between accounts from their mobile phone and to set up text alerts if their account balance falls below a certain level.

Peter Jackson, Lloyds TSB managing director, said text message banking makes it “as easy as possible for customers to view their balance, keep on top of their finances day to day and transfer money when they need to.”

However, criticised the cost of the account.

Andrew Hagger, Moneynet spokesperson, said: “£2.50 per month may not seem much for those who live and breathe by their mobile phone but you can get all the information you need absolutely free with internet banking.

“It may be a matter of convenience but there’s no getting away from the fact that it’s another way of getting customers to cough up and swell the bank’s profits.”
