Canterbury Europe placed into administration
The European trading arm of New Zealand firm Canterbury Group has been placed into administration.
The sports and leisurewear firm, based in Stockport, distributes items for the rugby union sector and sponsors a number of rugby union and rugby league teams in the UK and Europe, including the Scottish national RU team, London Wasps, Leinster and Cardiff.
The news has resulted in the loss of more than 70 jobs in the UK and comes just a week after coffee and deli chain, Coffee Republic, entered administration.
David Costley-Wood and Brian Green, of KPMG Restructuring based in Manchester, have been appointed joint administrators of Canterbury.
The firm recently branched out into other sports and has sponsorship agreements with Portsmouth and Lille football clubs and county cricket sides Yorkshire and Hampshire.
However, according to KPMG, all sponsorship contracts with Canterbury Europe had been terminated.
According to Mr Costley-Wood, the weakening of the pound has affected the company since it imports its goods from the Far East.
Canterbury’s businesses outside Europe are not affected.
