O2 is to enter the UK’s personal finance market, by forming an alliance with NatWest, by launching a Visa pre-paid cash-card service.

The first products from O2 Money, with the backing of NatWest, are two cash cards, designed to give people more control of their money.

The cards will be in circulation from next month at no charge to O2 customers, including the pay-as-you-go variety, as long as they top up regularly.

According to NatWest, people are now more than ever using their mobile phones as a way of controlling their money and the bank said it is always on the lookout for new ways of incorporating the mobile phone into its services.

Ronan Dunne, O2’s UK Chief Executive, commented: “The strength of our brand and relationship with our customers gives us the ideal opportunity to take O2 into a completely new market.”

“By bringing a fresh, transparent and customer-focused approach to pre-paid cards, we plan to drive this market and take a significant share. In partnership with NatWest, O2 Money is delivering new ways of helping our customers better connect with their money,” added Mr Dunne.

Meanwhile, Helen Page, Managing Director of Marketing and Innovation at NatWest, said: “In the current climate, NatWest is more committed than ever to developing innovative solutions to help customers connect with their finances.”
