Domino's Pizza continues to benefit from stay-at-home Brits

Recession hit Britons who have abandoned eating out have boosted Domino’s Pizza’s sales, with profits at the pizza delivery group rising 25% to £13.6 million.

Fast food chains appear to be one of the few industries that are thriving during the recession with the nation’s enthusiasm for takeaways showing no signs of abating.

Total sales, including new outlets, grew 15.4% to £196.4 million, while like-for-like sales at stores opened in 2008 increased 7.1%.

The group has benefited from advertising campaigns such as the sponsorship of ITV’s prime-time TV show, Britain’s Got Talent.

Chris Moore, the group’s chief executive, said: “While hot weather does have an impact on our business, sales start to come back after prolonged periods of warmer weather as the lure of the barbecue fades.”

“We are mindful of the tougher second half comparatives, especially towards the latter part of the year,” added Mr Moore.

Mr Moore added that the group is “on track to exceed market expectations for the full year.”

The pizza group continued its expansion programme opening almost two dozen stores during the first six months of the year, taking its total number of outlets to 576.

The chain is planning a total of 50 new stores this year, which will take its total to more than 600.
