Co-op and Ecology best for ethical mortgages

The Co-operative Bank and Ecology Building Society are two of the best institutions for ethically minded mortgage holders, it emerged this week.

Virginia Wallis, money expert at the Guardian newspaper, recommended the two lenders to homeowners with “ethical ideals”.

Co-operative’s tracker mortgage charges 2.49% above the base rate, and is available at up to 75% of the value of the property mortgaged.

Ecology Building Society, meanwhile, will lend up to 85% of the total value of the property, but only to borrowers with an environmentally friendly home or business.

“To find out how more mainstream lenders match up to your ethical criteria you should visit YourEthicalMoney.org,” Wallis concluded.
