Post Office launches ‘gap year gatecrasher’ insurance

The Post Office this week launched travel insurance for “gap year gatecrashers”.

The insurance, aimed at over-65s who want to travel overseas on a regular basis, provides year-round, multi-trip cover.

The upper age limit of the cover is 74, and policyholders can choose to add optional extras including extended baggage, excess waiver, and golf cover.

Research by the Post Office found a fifth (21%) of parents aged over 50 whose children have lived or holidayed abroad went to visit their children to broaden their own horizons.

Furthermore, nearly a third (32%) of over-65s have visited a family member abroad this year.

“Many children may use their gap year as a chance to get away from their parents, only to find mum and dad have plans of their own to tag along,” said Rachel Croft, Post Office head of travel insurance.

“For parents, being able to stay with their child whilst they are living abroad means they can holiday for less, but often leads to them travelling to new places and holidaying for longer, making it even more important to have adequate travel insurance in place.”
