Repossessions and new mortgage arrears fall

”Repossessions

New research from the Financial Services Authority (FSA) puts the number of homes in repossession in the three months to the end of June at 13,610, representing a 9% fall on the previous quarter.

However, the figure is 23% up on the same period of 2008, although the regulator says the sharp rise in repossessions seen in 2008 has showed signs of levelling over the last three quarters.

The trend is probably due to lenders acting less quickly, new measures from the Ministry of Justice introduced in November and lower interest rates.

The number of people entering mortgage arrears also fell during the second quarter of 2009, down 14% from the previous three months, to 51,000.

At the same time, the total number of people actually in arrears continued rising, to 403,000, a 30% increase on a year earlier.

Commenting on the FSA possession figures, Paul Broadhead, head of mortgage policy at the Building Societies Association says: “Publicity around the Government schemes and greater lender forbearance is encouraging borrowers to contact their lender earlier.”

He adds: “BSA research shows that where this happens the overwhelming majority of borrowers are able to keep their homes and successfully overcome their arrears problems.”
