RBS and NatWest named top mortgage providers

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and its NatWest subsidiary are heading the list in a survey of the UK’s most competitive mortgage lenders, by Evaluate Technologies.

The firm, which specialises in “cutting edge” technology for the financial services sector, studied the market over the three months to the end of August and awarded top place to the majority state-owned group.

HSBC came in second and First Direct third.

The competition was assessed according to the number of times mortgages appeared in Evaluate’s best buy lists, a measure which should also indicate keenness to lend.

RBS and NatWest had 20 appearances; HSBC 19 and First Direct 14.

However, it should be noted that the HSBC score does not take account of the bank’s recently launched 1.99% tracker deal.

Britannia Building Society, Woolwich and Abbey also achieved respectable rankings.

In related news, the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has said is pleased to note that people are more satisfied with their mortgage lender than they were a year ago, according to a survey from Which? Money.

Overall, average customer satisfaction rose from 58% to 62% and the CML believes the improvement reflects the efforts that the lending industry has been making to improve customer service and communication.
