Jaguar Land Rover to close plant, Lada cuts 27,600 jobs

Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed it is to shut one of its sites in the West Midlands due to a restructure of its operations.

The group will decide next year whether it will close its Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham or its Range Rover factory in Solihull.

While the closure of the plant is not expected until after 2014, the announcement raises doubts over job losses.

However, there will be no job losses in the short-term due to an agreement between unions and the firm.

In a statement, the group, which is owned by Indian giant Tata, said: “As the company reduces engineering complexity for its new product range, West Midlands manufacturing will transfer from two plants to one by the middle of the next decade, improving efficiency and cost.”

The firm has already shed 2,200 posts since last year, reducing the workforce to just over 14,000.

In related news today, Russia’s largest carmaker, Avtovaz, is to eliminate more than 27,000 positions, which represent over 25% of its 102,000-strong workforce.

Avtovaz, which makes Lada cars, is struggling with the global slump in demand with sales plummeting 40% this year.

Meanwhile, it was revealed earlier this week that around 1,100 Vauxhall jobs could go as a result of Canadian parts maker Magna’s restructuring of Opel.

While full details have not yet emerged, there is speculation that the Luton plant will be worst hit but jobs will also go at Ellesmere Port. Vauxhall has around 5,500 workers at the two sites.

Opel has a European workforce of almost 55,000, with 25,000 based in Germany.
