ABI issues lodger warning

by David Masters

Homeowners renting a room to a lodger should inform their home insurance provider, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said this week.
According to the ABI, homeowners who don’t inform their insurance provider about taking on a lodger risk invalidating their policy.
“If you are applying for insurance and you are taking a lodger, or if you have got a lodger, you should disclose that to your insurance company,” said Malcolm Tarling, ABI spokesperson.
Tarling added homeowners should always report any other changes in risk to their home insurance provider.
Some insurers, including esure, refuse to provide cover to homeowners renting a room to a lodger.
The number of homeowners renting a spare room to a lodger has increased from 477,000 to 720,000 in the past 12 months, according to research by spareroom.co.uk.
