M&S sees best quarter for two years
Marks and Spencer (M&S), which is Britain’s largest clothing retailer, has reported a strong performance by recording its best quarter for two years.
The retailing industry overall has suffered in the wake of the economic downturn as consumers rein in their spending.
However, today the retailer said like-for-like sales in the UK (which exclude new stores) eased to 0.5% for the 13 weeks to September 26.
The results were better than the market had expected but despite an improvement in sales, Sir Stuart Rose, M&S chairman, said he expects next year to be tough “and we will continue to run the business accordingly.”
In the meantime, the retailing giant said it is recruiting 20,000 temporary staff for Christmas, bucking the trend in a climate where many businesses are hiring rather than firing.
Meanwhile, online sales soared 30%, while international stores were up 9.6%.
Total clothing sales grew by 2.7%, partly due to the launch of its new womenswear range, Indigo, said the group.
