Increased optimism pushes Dow Jones through 10,000 barrier
The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke through the 10,000 barrier yesterday – for the first time in a year.
The Dow closed up 144.8 at 10,015.86 – its highest level since October last year.
London responded with the FTSE 100 rising by more than 100 points to close at a 13-month high at 5,256.1. Banking giant Barclays closed up 6.6%.
Meanwhile, France’s Cac 40 index and Germany’s Dax both experienced gains of around 2%.
The strong gains came after US banking giant JPMorgan Chase far exceeded analysts expectations by announcing strong quarter three results.
The bank announced a £2.3 billion profit – outperforming the £330 million income it made in the same period a year ago.
The bank was the first US bank to report its results. Today, Goldman Sachs will post its results with analysts expecting strong results but Citigroup is forecast to report a loss.
Bank of America is due to release its results tomorrow and markets are also expecting a loss.
