The world’s largest phone maker, Nokia, has today posted a loss for the July to September period sending its shares falling 4% as the market digested the news.

The group said it made a net loss of €913 million (£838 million) for the period, compared with a profit of €1.1 billion in the same period a year ago.

Net sales fell to €9.8 billion compared with €12.2 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, said that sales “were constrained by component shortages”.

Nokia has been hit by a wave of more sophisticated smartphones, introduced by companies such as Apple but despite the fall in sales, Nokia has maintained its overall worldwide market share in mobile devices at almost 40% and has gained market share in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Commenting on today’s results, Thomas Langer at West LB, said: “Overall, I have to say it is kind of a mixed bag with a negative bias. I think that the big picture doesn’t look that well.”
