Thousands of jobs are at risk at Threshers and Wine Rack after a source close to the company revealed to The Times that administration could not be ruled out as the group struggles amid the economic downturn.

The off-licence’s owner, First Quench Retailing, has confirmed it is looking at “restructuring options” after warning earlier this year of its ability to continue as a going concern.

As a result, 6,500 jobs are at risk throughout the UK at more than 1,000 stores.

In a statement, the company said: “It is no secret that the credit crunch has made a very competitive marketplace even more challenging.”

“The board, in consultation with its advisers, has been actively considering a number of restructuring and strategic options for First Quench and any decision will be made in the best interests of the business and its stakeholders,” said the statement.
