UK construction sector contracts for 21st consecutive month

The Chartered Institute of Planning & Supply(CIPS)/Markit purchasing managers index revealed a marginal rise in UK construction activity to 47.0 in November, from 46.2 in October.

Any figure below the 50 mark represents a contraction but November’s reading represents the highest since August as the rate of decline slows and new order volumes saw an increase for the first time since February 2008.

The industry has been hit by a slump in demand for commercial and civil engineering work but the recent bounce in the housing market has boosted residential construction, which grew for the third consecutive month and at its fastest rate in over two years.

CIPS chief executive, David Noble, told Reuters: “One positive is that the sector is not contracting as sharply as it was this time last year and purchasing managers are remaining upbeat about future business conditions.”

“However, it appears we are still some way off from returning to growth let alone reaching the level it was at only two years ago,” added Mr Noble.
