New car sales continue to rise in December
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has today revealed sales of new cars grew by 38.9% in December 2009 compared with the same month in 2008, boosted by the Government’s scrappage scheme.
The ‘cash for bangers’ scheme pays consumers £2,000 to get rid of their old cars and replace it with a more environmentally friendly car.
In the first six months of the year, new car sales fell by 25.9%. In the latter half of the year, they grew by 21%. The scheme was launched in May 2009.
The SMMT said sales in 2009 totalled 1.99 million – a fall of 6.4% compared with 2008’s figure.
While the figure for 2009 the lowest year-end total since 1995, it exceeded forecasts.
Meanwhile the SMMT said the Ford Fiesta was the best selling car during December for the tenth time in 2009, as motorists elected to buy smaller cars.
Commenting on today’s figures, SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: “The December new car market was boosted by the scrappage scheme and consumers looking to avoid January’s VAT increase.
“The 2009 market of 1,994,999 new car registrations was significantly above early expectations and reflects the positive impact of the scheme, due to end in February,” added Mr Everitt.
