Eurostar sales rise despite Christmas travel disruption

Eurostar, the Cross-Channel rail service, has reported a rise in ticket sales and passenger numbers for the 2009 year.

The train service that links the UK to France and Belgium said sales totalled £675.5 million – a rise of 1.7% compared with 2008.

The service carried 1.2% more passengers in the year, with total traffic growing to more than 9 million people.

However, the rise came despite the breakdown of the service in December which left over 2,000 travellers trapped in the Channel Tunnel overnight during the weekend of December 18 and 19.

Several trains had broken down as a result of the severe cold weather and thousands of passengers were hit by days of disruption thereafter.

The company, which is carrying out an investigation into why the breakdown of the service occurred, said it expects to pay up to £10 million in compensation to passengers who were affected by the travel disruption last month.
