Wal-Mart, which is the world‘s largest retailer, has announced it is laying off more than 11,000 employees at its Sam’s Club division in the US.

Its Sam’s Club warehouse chain employs more than 100,000 staff across 600 stores and the cuts represent around a tenth of its workforce.

Revenue at the division fell nearly 1% to $11.55 billion in the last quarter, while Wal-Mart stores reported a 1.2% sales growth to $61.81 billion.

However, the CEO of Sam’s Club said employees who are being laid off are encouraged to apply for other positions like the “Shopper Savers” which is recruiting almost the same number as those being made redundant but it’s not a guarantee of re-employment.

Late last year, Wal-Mart’s chief executive, Mike Duke, said that the trading environment for the whole group continued to be “difficult”.

The latest round of job cuts will be a blow to the world’s largest economy which emerged from recession in the third quarter of 2009.
