British Gas workers to strike

The GMB trade union has today announced staff at British Gas have voted in favour of industrial action over claims of “macho management” and changes to staff terms and conditions.

The union has given the UK’s largest energy retailer a week to respond before deciding its next move.

GMB said over 61% of its 8,000 members turned out for the vote with 82% supporting a strike.

GMB national secretary, Gary Smith, said: “There is a bullying management culture which has developed under the current leadership in British Gas and our people are absolutely sick to the back teeth of it.

“They don’t want to be under pressure to be sales persons, they don’t want to be forced to sell products and energy.

“They want to focus on the core business, which is about maintaining people’s gas appliances and ensuring they work safely,” he added.

In response to the forthcoming strikes, Matthew Bateman, director of heating services at British Gas, said the company was “disappointed by the GMB’s action”.

However, Mr Bateman did add: “We remain committed to talking with the GMB and avoiding this unnecessary industrial action.”

The news comes as British Airways (BA) cabin crew members ended their 3-day strike yesterday.

Last month, BA‘s 12,000 cabin crew members voted to take industrial action over cost-cutting measures, which include a pay freeze and a switch to part-time working for thousands of staff.

However, a collapse in talks between union bosses and BA resulted in a three day strike, which commenced Saturday, March 20, while a further four day strike will commence on March 27.
