Recalls lead Toyota to halt production in France and Britain

Struggling Japanese carmaker Toyota is to suspend production at plants in France and Britain for two weeks from Monday amid safety recall problems.

The carmaker has been suffering amid major safety fears and has recalled almost 9 million vehicles over concerns about accelerator pedals and brake systems. The problems have been blamed for almost 60 deaths in the USA.

According to Kyodo news agency, Toyota, which is the world’s largest carmaker, will suspend work in Britain from next Monday to Thursday and again from April 6 to 9, when it will also temporarily halt production at its plant in France.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), so far this year, Toyota has seen sales fall by 5% against a year ago - at a time when the UK was in the midst of its worst recession in decades.

A Toyota spokesperson said the end of the car scrappage scheme this month will also lead to a further slump in sales.
