Jarvis administrators axe 1,100 jobs

Administrators at Jarvis, the railway maintenance company which entered administration last week, have announced they will shed 1,100 jobs at the ailing company.

Deloitte said the job losses will affect workers at the head office in York, as well as in Doncaster, Glasgow, Leeds, Newcastle and Peterborough.

Last week, Deloitte was called in to the rail maintenance firm after it was refused further support by its lenders.

Jarvis has been hit by a considerable fall in volumes of rail and plant work over the last few months and the administration came just a few weeks after the firm reported a full-year operating loss of £5 million.

Deloitte said it is seeking a buyer for the business as a going concern. It said: “After reviewing the business, and conducting negotiations with key stakeholders, the administrators have concluded that it is not possible to continue to trade the businesses in the absence of further funding.

“It has regrettably, therefore, been necessary to make some 1,100 redundancies across the three companies…”

However, Deloitte said that Jarvis Accommodation Services Limited, the facilities management part of the group, is still trading as normal and there has been “a significant amount of interest” in this business.
