Prime Minister Gordon Brown has today confirmed the general election will take place in exactly one month’s time - on 6 May.

The move was widely expected and the PM made the announcement outside Downing Street, following a 20-minute meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace to seek the dissolution of Parliament.

Mr Brown will now face one month of tough campaigning in order to win the Labour Government a fourth term - however, the Conservative Party are currently ahead in several opinion polls.

The PM said Britain was on the “road to recovery” and urged voters not to put it “at risk”.

Meanwhile, David Cameron said the Conservative Party offered a “fresh start”, while Lib Dem Nick Clegg said his party is offering “real change”.
