Ryanair to charge £1 to spend a penny
Budget airline Ryanair has confirmed it will go ahead with plans to charge passengers £1 or €1 to use the toilet.
The no-frills airline said all onboard toilets will become coin-operated, while the airline is also slashing the number toilets, meaning there may be only one toilet on planes carrying almost 200 passengers.
The airline already charges passengers to check in luggage, for online check-in, for onboard snacks and for credit card payments so today’s announcement will come as no surprise to many.
Ryanair chief executive, Michael O’Leary, renowned for his controversial comments, last year said he would cut costs and boost profits by asking passengers to stand during flights.
Mr O’Leary was in talks with European safety regulators about the matter and should the ‘vertical seating’ proposal gain approval, Ryanair plans to order new jets or refurbish its existing fleet.
Mr O’Leary is constantly looking at ways to cut costs and sparked outrage when he suggested introduced a “fat tax” last year for overweight passengers.
Meanwhile, commenting on today’s announcement, Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said: “By charging for the toilets we are hoping to change passenger behaviour so that they use the bathroom before or after the flight.
“That will enable us to remove two out of three of the toilets and make way for at least six extra seats,” he added.
