Female breadwinner a rising trend
The female breadwinner is a rising trend in the UK, according to new research published this week.
A study by Aviva found a tenfold increase in the number of dads staying at home to care for young children while their partner goes out to work.
Over 600,000 men now stay at home to look after their kids while their wife or girlfriend works. This is compared to just 60,000 ten years ago.
The study also found that in one in six (16%) with dependent children, the female is the main wage earner.
Of women who are the main breadwinner, four in ten (37%) said they feel guilty leaving their children while they go out to work.
However, only 9% said they’d actually want to swap places with their partner and be a stay-at-home parent.
“The lines of ‘traditional’ roles and responsibilities are becoming blurred – it’s no longer necessarily men who look after the money and women who look after the children,” said Louise Colley, Aviva spokesperson.
“While generally speaking it’s still more usual for men to take the more conventional role of the main income earner, our research shows that this is shifting and more women are becoming the breadwinners.
“While both roles are equally valuable, nowadays it’s quite likely that women will be heading off to the office while men are changing nappies and doing the school run.”
