Hail the Tesco “mini-village”

Tesco is expanding into property development with a vision of creating four “mini-villages” in South East England, each with a Tesco supermarket at its heart.

Plans have been drawn up for Bromley-By-Bow, Dartford, Woolwich and Streatham.

Lambeth Council is already working with the retailer to deliver the “Streatham Hub”, which involves a full-size ice rink and a new transport hub, alongside 200 new homes.

Plans for 400 homes in Bromley-by-Bow could be approved as early as next month.

The UK’s biggest supermarket has already announced that it intends to launch its financial services division as a full-service retail bank offering mortgages.

The retailer is expected to unveil a current account later this year and expand into home loans after that.
