Consumer confidence falls in April

A survey by GfK NOP for the European Commission revealed a fall in consumer confidence for April.
It was the second consecutive month that morale was low – as uncertainty surrounds the economy ahead of next week’s general election.
The consumer confidence index gave an overall score of -16, a fall of one point from the previous month but much higher than the -27 recorded a year earlier.
Nick Moon, MD of GfK NOP Social Research, comments: “As the opinion polls are suggesting, the government has not got the boost from a rise in economic confidence that probably represented its best hope of retaining power.
“While things are far better than they were a year ago the improvement has pretty much stalled, and there has been no real change in consumer confidence since last September,” he added.
The survey was conducted between April 9 and 18 and questioned more than 2,000 consumers aged 16 or over.
