UK unemployment total highest since December 1994

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today revealed that UK unemployment rose to a level not seen since December 1994.

According to the ONS, the number of people unemployed in the UK rose by 53,000 to 2.51 million in the three months to March.

The latest figures means the unemployment rate held steady at 8%.

In the meantime, the number of Britons claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) fell by 27,100 in April to 1.52 million.

The ONS also revealed that the number of people classed as economically inactive has reached an all-time high of 8.17 million.

The latest figures come as David Cameron faces his first full day as the new Prime Minister.
