Sainsbury’s exceeds expectations as sales growth soars

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s today announced an 18% rise in full-year profit, beating expectations.

Britain’s third largest supermarket said same-store sales, which exclude new store openings, grew by 4.3%, not including fuel sales.

The company opened more than 50 new convenience stores over the year and said it was well placed to cope with the tough economic climate.

It recently said it is bringing in a million more customers a week.

The chain has benefited from the economic downturn after luring customers away from upmarket chains such as Marks and Spencer and Waitrose as cash-strapped consumers looked to save money.

Furthermore, bargain hunters have been opting for the supermarket’s ‘basics’ range which has boosted sales at the group.

Chairman David Tyler said: “We have delivered sales growth ahead of the market and good profit growth.”

Meanwhile, chief executive Justin King added: “We believe our strong space growth plans, supporting our expanding food, complementary non-food and convenience store businesses … will enable the business to make further good progress.”
