UK workforce in for pensions shock

The majority of Britain’s workforce will not be able to retire before 70, a pensions expert has predicted.

Robin Ellison, partner at Pinsent Masons, said the government will be forced to increase the retirement age at a faster pace than most people expect due to a growing population of older people.

“This is just the start of a series of changes,” Ellison said.

“I don’t think the politicians want to frighten horses, they are just saying it is going up one year, but everybody knows it is going to have to go up four or five years at least.”

Ellison’s comments were followed by a call from John Ball, head of defined benefit counselling at Tower Watson, for the government to be honest about how much the retirement age needs to rise.

“This generation of politicians could do their successors a favour by establishing a clear expectation that the state pension age will continue to rise if longevity continues to improve,” Ball said.
