The Labor Department today revealed the world’s largest economy added 431,000 jobs last month – the majority of them temporary Government jobs to help conduct the 2010 census.

However, the figure fell far short of the 515,000 expected by analysts and follows an unrevised 290,000 increase in April.

As a result, the unemployment rate has fallen to 9.7% in May from 9.9% in April.

The total number of people unemployed in the US last month is still around the 15 million mark.

The jobs data showed that the private sector created 41,000 jobs in the month, employment in professional and business services grew by 22,000.

The manufacturing industry, which is leading the way in the economic recovery, added 29,000 jobs. However, the hard-hit construction industry lost 35,000 jobs in May.

Total Government employment, which includes state and local jobs, rose by 390,000.
