Italians stage strike against tough austerity measures
Italian workers are the latest to stage strikes amid tough austerity measures, introduced by the country’s Government to bring its budget deficit down.
The union, CGIL, called the strike, after cuts were made in funding for local Government, as well as the freezing of public sector pay.
Protests were held in Rome, Milan and Bologna, however, two major unions, CISL and UIL, did not take part.
There was some disruption to transport links, while some flights were cancelled in Rome and underground services were affected in Rome and Naples.
“No one denies that we need to make cuts, but they must be cuts which are fair and look to the future, rather than just slashing spending,” Susanna Camusso, deputy leader of the CGIL, told a march in Bologna.
The strikes come after Greece and Spain have also staged nationwide protests. However, the strikes in Greece were extremely violent and led to three deaths in Athens last month.
Italy is struggling to reduce its debt and contain budget deficits. Its tough austerity package of €24 billion (£20 billion) was approved by the Government last month.
The cuts are meant to bring the budget deficit to below 3% by 2012.
